June 2010 Newsletter

June 21, 2010

Dear Friend,

June 10th marks 20 years since my best childhood friend, Scott Miya, succumbed to cancer and inspired me to chase my dreams and start my own business. It is hard to believe that I started gardening two days per week with an old Toyota pickup and one helper. I am proud to say that we still service eighty percent of those handful of clients who helped me build up our routes. July 1st marks the 5th anniversary since I took over the operations of Groundworks. In celebration of this, Rick Nakao, who runs a side business building websites called Summernet, is in the process of building our new website. The address is www.groundworksvip.com. Please take a look at it and let us know what you think. Please be forewarned that much of the site is still incomplete and some of the language is still in Greek. We will be completing the basic layout in the next couple of months. I look forward to highlighting our work and providing helpful information and insight to the services that we provide. There will be a page for you to request services from us.

Recently, we started a new incentive program for our crews. Whenever they do an extraordinary job, are caught by management in the act of helping someone else, or obtain referrals for new work, their crew will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win a nice prize. For April and May, Alfonso was the lucky winner of the 19” Visio LED flat screen TV; Israel and Isidro were the winners of Target gift cards. We are asking you to call, write or email us if you feel that your crew has done an outstanding job of working on your property.

Martin wanted to remind all of our clients to remember to take care of their trees. During drought conditions, trees need nourishment and deep and infrequent watering to combat the stress from insects and diseases that may weaken them. Please call Martin to get a free quote on the fertilization of your valuable trees.

Here are the top five things we recommend to do this summer:
1) Program the sprinkler controllers to comply with watering restrictions.
2) Repair broken or leaking sprinkler zones to minimize water waste.
3) Fertilize mature trees.
4) Proper pruning of trees and removing dead wood to increase efficient transpiration.
5) Mulching of planters to retain moisture in the soil.

Have a safe and enjoyable 4th of July!
