September 2010

Although we really did not experience a summer this year, fall is here and it is a great time to install new plants. As I mentioned before, because of the slowdown in the housing industry, the plant selection and quality are excellent. We will be applying fertilizers, selective weed control on cool season turf and pre-emergent herbicide to reduce annual bluegrasses weeds from spreading in late winter and early spring.

Dennis Yamashiro, our new irrigation manager, has been conducting many sprinkler system analyses.  He is finding many unseen sprinkler problems and resolving them. Please take advantage of his immense experience; you won’t regret it. Our landscape crews have been busy stabilizing hillsides with jute netting and new plantings in preparation for the rainy season.  Our tree trimming crew has been busy thinning out trees under the guidance of our Certified Arborist, Martin van Zeyl. Martin is thinning the trees in preparation of the Santa Ana and winter winds which usually cause property damage from falling branches. Please remember that it is still too early to prune pine, eucalyptus and cedar trees. Oaks need their dead wood removed before it gets cold.

Please call if you would like your warm season grass overseeded with annual winter ryegrass.  Also, call Mimi Lujan if you would like Halloween themed flowers or fall colors planted.

Now that we’ve passed the Autumnal Equinox, daylight will be getting shorter so now is a great time to install landscape lighting.  Lighting in the garden allows you to enjoy your garden after dark, is a safety feature to illuminate steps and other trip hazards in the yard as well as deterring unwanted intruders from entering or hiding in your yard.

Thank you for your nominations for excellent service. This has given us valuable feedback of how our crews are interacting with you. Thank you for your trust in our services.  We have been receiving many referrals for new clients.  Next month, I will announce even more exciting news!

Until next month, have a great day! ….and as always, we will continue the Japanese-American Tradition!
